Today’s biopharmaceutical project managers have many more tools than in previous years for monitoring the progress of, and communicating with their multidisciplinary teams. Project managers monitor timelines, budgets, and milestones through use of real-time analytics, data-tracking software, process-modeling software, and the increased transparency provided to team members through shared enterprise information systems. As managers of change and associated risks, they encourage cross-team collaboration, interpret project needs to upper management, smooth transitions from initial stages to product launch (commercial supply), and oversee ongoing contractor and supplier partnerships (together with supply-chain managers). They oversee progress and continuity of outsourced elements to multiple service providers and to development/manufacturing sites. More biopharmaceutical companies are embracing the need for trained project managers than they were even a decade ago. Progress is ongoing, but many gaps remain, not the least of which is the need for improved training and access to the skilled managers and technicians of the future.
