This webcast features: Leisha Kopp, Applications Scientist, Mirus Bio Suspension Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells are often utilized for protein expression in biomanufacturing given their capacity for high-density growth in chemically defined media, human-biosimilar posttranslational modifications, and strong history of regulatory approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, many early stage researchers rely on HEK 293 systems for screening candidate compounds because of additional costs and time associated with production in CHO cells. The CHOgro® High Yield…

Perfusion confusion? Cytiva launches Xcellerex system to simplify process
The Xcellerex Automated Perfusion System (APS) simplifies processes and reduces risk when intensifying upstream operations, Cytiva says. We speak with Andreas Castan, strategic technology partnerships leader, to find out why. Bioprocess Insider (BPI): How common is cell cultivation using perfusion? Andreas Castan (AC): There are a number of perfusion-based products on the market, especially unstable proteins like coagulation factors (e.g. Factor VIII), but also mAbs (e.g. Infliximab). Some of these have been around for 20 years or more. The use…
Biopharma set for COVID-related single-use shortages, says survey
Biopharma faces delays obtaining single-use systems according to a survey that suggests disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing demand will result in shortages. Single-use bioprocessing technologies now dominate the pre-commercial manufacturing space according to research by Bioplan Associates. The organization quizzed 130 executives at biopharma firms and contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) and 150 tech suppliers and found that demand for single-use systems (SUS) has continued to increase in recent years. According to Bioplan managing partner Eric…
